From the Chief’s Corner: First, Do No Harm...

Have you ever been in a hurry and had that annoying little device with three colorful lights impact your journey? I’m sure you have. But have you ever truly thought about its origin and, more significantly, its importance?

In 1868, the first traffic light was installed in London. A short time later, in 1914, the American Traffic Signal Company installed the world’s first electric traffic signal in Cleveland, Ohio. 

So, over 100 years ago, police and fire departments had the ability to control signaling devices at intersections in order to make them safer. However, I read this week that, right here in the United States, two emergency vehicles collided at an intersection while traveling to two different incidents. In this case, tragedy occurred, someone died, and several others were injured.

That incident brings me to the next concept that I want to mention: The Latin phrase “primum non nocere,” which means “First, Do No Harm.” That phrase is often attributed to the Hippocratic Oath that many in the medical field are familiar with. I

So, what can a traffic light and a phrase from the Hippocratic Oath teach us about In-Building Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement Systems (ERCES)? Quite a lot, actually. Let me try to help make sense of it.

Dear Safer Buildings Coalition Members 

Time flies. It has been an honor to be on the Safer Buildings Coalition Board of Directors of for the last three years. During this time, I have served as Member At Large, Vice President and, most recently, President.

These three years have been full of amazing experiences and have given me a lot of professional satisfaction. During my tenure, I have come across some of the most passionate, talented and experienced professionals in our industry, and I am proud to be part of this highly motivated team. I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to lead such a dedicated and skilled team that represents different companies and categories of the Public Safety segment market.

The NEDAS Virtual Symposium Is in the Books – Check out the Special SBC Session

The NEDAS Virtual Symposium took place Sept. 8-10. The online event brought together thought leaders and other prominent players in the industry and featured a wide variety of informative sessions covering topics of interest to everyone in the industry as well as virtual networking and exhibit space.

The event also offered SBC the opportunity to present a very special panel discussion, which featured the entire SBC Board of Directors, including the new members elected just last month.

SBC Member RF Solutions Hosts BICSI-Accredited Webinars

We are delighted to announce that Safer Buildings Coalition member RF Solutions will host a BICSI-accredited webinar (1CEC) — “Fundamentals of In-Building Public Safety Systems” – on September 23rd at 2pm EDT and October 1 at 11am EDT. Chris Godwin, Chief Technology Officer, and Lisa Jardine, Director of Communications, will present. These webinars are recommended for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge, including electrical contractors, cable installers, inspectors, consulting engineers, building owners and developers.
