Candidate Statement:

I am writing to seek your support for my nomination as the Vice President for the Safer Buildings Coalition Board of Directors. As a dedicated member since 2020, I am committed to advancing our organization’s mission and bringing substantial value to our collective efforts. My candidacy offers several key benefits to the Coalition:

1. Experience on the SBC Board: As an At-Large Member, I have gained a deeper understanding of the operations of the SBC and developed a good rapport with the current Board that I can leverage to be an effective leader and contributor.
2. SBC-specific advocacy: As a member of the Member Advocacy Work Group, I have honed my ability to represent the diverse interests of our member companies and to advocate for policies and initiatives that benefit our entire membership.
3. 36 years of public safety telecom experience: I bring knowledge across technology leadership, development engineering, strategic planning, and business development, with extensive work alongside both public safety and commercial end-users and a deep understanding of customer needs and regulatory requirements.
4. DAS technology and leadership expertise: At Commdex, I lead a team of engineers and technicians that designs and installs DAS systems, and my in-depth knowledge of DAS designs and requirements will be invaluable in guiding our technical discussions and decision-making.
5. Deep knowledge of the regulatory environment: Leading the team that coordinates with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) nationwide, I have a comprehensive understanding of NFPA standards and IFC/IBC requirements at the national level as well as local AHJ regulations — perspective crucial for developing effective advocacy strategies and ensuring compliance.
6. Broad industry network: My deep experience with telecom equipment OEMs, resellers, distributors, and integrators gives me a comprehensive view of the industry ecosystem that can be leveraged to foster collaboration and drive innovation within the Coalition.

By electing me as Vice President, you will gain a passionate advocate who understands the intricacies of our industry, can bridge diverse perspectives, and is dedicated to advancing the Safer Buildings Coalition’s goals. I am committed to working tirelessly to ensure that our organization remains a leading voice in promoting safety, innovation, and excellence in in-building wireless communications.

Bio:

Mark W. Johnson is Vice President of Operations at Commdex, LLC, where he provides overall direction and execution of the company’s operational functions, leading directors and managers across the organization with accountability for growth, profitability, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction. He previously served Commdex as Director of Engineering — managing the team that designs and installs distributed antenna systems (DAS) and the relationships with DAS OEM suppliers — as Presale Business Manager, and as Senior Account Executive for State, Local, and Commercial Markets.

Before Commdex, Mark spent 27 years at Motorola Solutions (1990–2017) in a progression of engineering and commercial leadership roles, including Senior Account Executive for Petrochemical Commercial Markets, Channel Account Lead for North American Carriers, iDEN Accessories Business Manager (managing a $52M P&L), and Engineering Manager leading a team of 22 engineers in mobile-accessory development. He began his career as an electrical engineer in iDEN new product development.

Mark holds an MBA from the University of Miami and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University. A member of the Safer Buildings Coalition, he serves on the SBC Board as a Member At-Large and on the Member Advocacy Work Group, and brings 36 years of public safety telecommunications experience across technology leadership, engineering, strategic planning, and business development.
