A few days ago, the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) launched the first of four tests within their In-Building Public Safety Communications (IB-PSC) certification program that includes Technician Level I, Level II, Level III and Designer. Model codes and standards provide a means for the AHJ to require certification of in-building system training by an approved organization or approved school for installation and design personnel. The new NICET IB-PSC certification program can meet those requirements. When I read the announcement, I reflected on my experience as an authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) and the basic principle we were taught that to require something within your jurisdiction, it must readily be available in the marketplace. One simple but thought-provoking question we often ask ourselves at the Coalition when discussing outcomes is this; “What Does Winning Look Like”.

Message from the SBC Board President: An Opportunity to Serve and to Grow

Eric Toenjes

Posted on June 23, 2021

We are all called to contribute in a variety of ways.  It is important to contribute to the success of our employers and of course our families, but also to the general welfare of society.  With the Safer Buildings Coalition there are many opportunities to serve, but also many rewards for doing so.

As I look back at my personal journey with SBC, I first became involved as a member of the Advancement Work Group where I started to gain an understanding of how the organization functions and the goals being pursued.  From there I stepped up to be co-chair and eventually chaired the Advancement Work Group.  While gaining more exposure with the executive team and a desire to influence the goals, initiatives and growth of the coalition, those roles prepared me for my eventual run for Vice-President of the Board of Directors, and I now serve as President of the Board.

While preparing for some Safer Buildings Coalition (SBC) activities and annual meeting to be held at the International Wireless Communications Expo (IWCE) in Las Vegas, NV, I began to think about the relationship between Vegas and the new NICET In-Building Public Safety Communications Certification Program we have been working on for a whileNow I am sure you are thinking, what in the world does an event in Las Vegas and a certification program for those designing, installing, and maintaining In-Building Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES) have in common. Well, if you let your mind take a little journey with me, more than you think. To help get the point across about the importance of obtaining a professional certification in the field of in-building communications let us look at popular television show set in Las Vegas titled Pawn Stars.
